Getting back to work after vacation

It’s Monday. Not just any Monday…the first Monday after an amazing 9 day vacation to Bermuda and the Bahamas with my people. We had a great time, ate way too much, laughed way too loud, wobbled with the best of them, drove scooters on the left side of the road in Bermuda (that was an experience), enjoyed beaches all to ourselves, got way too much sun and took crazy amounts of naps while enjoying the ocean breeze.

And so here I am along with some helpful tips that I’ve incorporated as I dive back into reality and get back to work…

  • Plan ahead : Before I left for our vacation, I completed everything on my “to-do” list. Every session/wedding was edited and delivered. The studio and the house were both cleaned. All deliverables were sent out. Everyone that needed to know that I was going to be out of town was told. While the prep work prior to leaving was insane, now that I’m back, I’m able to start fresh. The bonus part was that while I was away, I didn’t have to worry about coming back to a bunch of editing nor a crazy number of emails to answer.
  • I gave myself a day…well, actually, a day and a half : By coming back Saturday morning vs. Sunday night, I was able to prep better for the week ahead. This extra time also gave me the ability to get the animals back and acclimate them to our return (that was insanely hard…they missed us so much – I think we missed them more! – so we had to spend extra time cuddling them and hanging out with them to let them know that we weren’t leaving them again), go grocery shopping (we were seriously running on empty!), unpack and deal with the mountains of laundry that we brought back home, pick up my cameras that had been sent off to Canon for cleaning and maintenance,  organize my work area (both at the studio and at home) so that I could come back to work ready to dive in.
  • Make a list and prioritize : I’m a habitual list maker – good ‘ol fashion pen and paper – so, for me, I was so happy to do this again! Last night, I made a list of every single thing that I have to get done between now and the end of the week. This morning, I prioritized the list. My whole goal is to not feel overwhelmed – which is super easy if I were to look at the list I made and think that I have to get it all in one day.
  • A light schedule : This first week isn’t packed with shoots and meetings. I’ve purposely kept my schedule light so that I can prepare – physically and mentally – for this weekend’s wedding, catch up on back end stuff, and plan ahead for the coming weeks. Today, the kids started school and that’s always a draining day so, I definitely wanted to take it easy.

And, while it was great to be away, it’s just as great to be back!
