A contract is a must-have when it comes to weddings/portraits and the photographer/client relationship. It serves to protect both your interests and your client’s interests, and it helps to make sure everyone knows what to expect up front before moving forward into a committed relationship. It answers questions like: What can the images be used for? What happens if the session needs to be rescheduled or the wedding is cancelled? What services and products are included in the price? How is payment handled? How is a situation handled if disputes arise? So many times I hear of horror stories that could have easily been avoided had there been a good, solid contract in place.
Likewise, it’s important to be fully prepared going into a shoot and courting relationship with clients. Documents such as informational questionnaires serve an amazing purpose when it comes to preparing for a shoot and getting to know your clients likes and expectations for your photography services. It’s also just as important to delineate your pricing and what clients receive for the agreed upon amount.
As a new photographer (even an established one), where do you begin? Are you handling it all properly? Are you profitable with the pricing you’ve set for your business? After all, you wanted to be a photographer and then BOOM…the fact that you are now running a business is starring you in the face. This all brings me to the announcement of the next IMP Studio Workshop…Contracts, Pricing and Procedures.
This workshop will help you outline a solid contract for your services, serve as a guide for how to determine a profitable pricing structure and draft questionnaires that will assist you in creating an improved relationship with your clients.
